June 18—Abundant life thriving
The thief comes to steal, kill and destroy; I have come that they may have abundant life. -- John 10:10
The three of us were sitting on a sidewalk bench, drinking coffee and discussing John 10:10 with Michelle's friend Reni, a sincerely beautiful woman who delights in welcoming all those who pass by into her heart. The conversation bounced back and forth in the air and mixed with the sweet aromas of freshly blooming roses, stormy mountain rain, cows coming home, food cooking on the stove. And I began to wander through my mind, thinking of the verse and of the thief killing and destroying things and also of abundant life.
Such as is constant in every part of the world, the thief is not absent here. I see the proof in physical and spiritual poverty, deteriorating health, distrust, discrimination. But, everywhere I turn, I also see proof of abundant life thriving. I see it in the vibrant young children that find a safe haven in Michelle's apartment, where they are enjoyed and thoroughly loved. I see it in mothers showering unconditional love on babies and hosts practicing a kind and passionate hospitality with guests. I see it in old men singing exuberant praise in church. Rotund grandmothers finding comfort in caring company. Teenagers discussing thoughts on grace. Women sharing shoes and tears and laughter with each other. Little girls bouncing down the street, holding gifts of flowers in delicate fingers. I see abundant life well up in Patricia's soul, as she fearlessly repeats new Bulgarian words from children who are eager to be blessed by her learning process. I see abundance in Michelle, as she loves without restraint and is loved greatly within rich and trusting relationships that she has formed in community here. I see Christ's life in all of you, as you are reading this, gaining encouragement and loving us back.
God is faithful to give abundant life freely here in Rakovitsa. And the contrast between this life and the darkness of the thief is so great, that it confirms my gratitude once again. I'm thoroughly convinced that life in Christ is the most beautiful thing that we will ever have the chance to witness and experience.
We are nearing the end of our time in Rakovitsa, and we are BLESSED.
Much love,
Laura for Team Bulgaria
